Book 47 –
In Which Truth Comes Up Against
Certain Obstacles
and Difficulties
in its Ongoing Quest to
Discover its Name
See it cowering in the margin of the frame…
If it snarls, beware - who knows if it's tame?
Although attempts to escape have rendered it lame,
the mere fact of its presence has hindered our game.
It's been ages since its first owner came,
and it was clearly the last one's intent to maim
it and thus confine it to the same, ever same -
though it's not at all clear just who's to blame.
In time it will decide on its own inner aim,
and Herr Truth, too, will out for his moment of fame
before consuming himself in his flame.
(Read her for his, by the way, if you'd rather claim,
in agreement with Nietzsche, that Truth is a dame.
In that case, it seems, the world's out to shame
her attempts to beautify herself with her name.)
