It’s a long, long road to walk, my friend –
that is,
ain’t no one ever made it to the well around the next bend.
If you want to, we could make a go
of it.
I’ll count to five and then we’ll make a leap around the hedgerow.
It’s already years gone by.
There was
a man who came around and said he’d make it on his first try.
Hardly even said goodbye, and on
he went –
around the curve and out of sight. Then we heard him put his hat on,
saying,
“So you thought that you had me?
You thought I’d die my death waiting?
Look at me. Am I panting
or have I gotten old?”
It’s a long, long road to walk, for sure.
Of course,
you can’t say even if what’s over there’s a greener pasture –
any greener than the road we’re on.
You know,
that man – if still alive, he probably leads a life of swearing,
damning his decision to go through –
as if
moving on a bit had brought him any closer to what’s true.
Least, that’s what I like to tell myself.
To those
who go up seeking love or fame, better grub or maybe one’s health,
I’d say,
“If you get there in one piece,
and if it’s all that much better,
could you please send back word or
someone to let us know?”
