The right avowal contains its own chastisement,
by and by receives its just comeuppance.
To arrogate for oneself a gaming yes is
to mobilize the contempt of abiding no’s.
I have come to a grim new awareness
of small fields lost through enclosure to the Big Field –
the field upon which struggle for the goods takes place,
yea’s and nay’s engaged in mortal combat,
heaping their dead in piles of broken literals,
spelling the hard news of a shared neutrality.
We are all atom-splitters in the end,
proud secularists in a world of timely faiths,
struggling along in a belated poiesis,
a perpetual creationism
in which twining things wind, unwind, and redouble.
