It would be enough – all that we could do, really –
enough just to keep it all together.
Why not talk about the latest appliances:
gadgets to mark time, devices to help spend it,
instruments that clamor, jar and jingle?
Where else do you suppose we’d be if we hadn’t
long ago forgotten the names of all the dwarves,
hadn’t confused the giant with the wolf,
set Goldilocks atop the beanstalk with her sheep?
It was all we could do just to recall the things
we might well need on a later errand
so as to avoid having to venture out twice,
enough just to gather it up, set it aside,
check the settings, unwind the extension,
screw in a replacement and tie up the loose ends.
