- for Rebecca -
High in May
when we netted the melodies
that swept down through the hollies,
did you think of a day
late next June
when we’d tape up the windows,
lay the candles out in rows
and embrace the typhoon?
Was that when
I decided I loved you,
only six months since I’d challenged the sea?
Did you know
that the planets above you
had it that we for each other were free?
High in Spring,
when we numbered our wishes
and we first exchanged kisses,
did we know time would bring,
ten years hence,
weekly memos to fill in
and the debts of two children –
all at love’s own expense?
Was that when
you decided you loved me,
seven lifetimes since we’d last said farewell?
Did I know
that the millions above me
drew our figures in the shape of an “L”?
High in May
when we netted the melodies
that swept down through the hollies…
Let’s remember that day,
high in May.
