All you notice at first is the surface veneer.
It’s a whole in which parts are embedded.
It’s fun to contemplate which way it next may veer
and think just how it determines where it’s headed.
And its members which fill up the inside –
do they worry about where they fit in the clan?
Do they parade about the whole with certain pride?
Do they follow closely a scripted plan?
Tomorrow there may be nothing left besides bone,
but as for now it’s inspirited and replete
with life and motility of its own.
Watch them pick themselves up, turn, disperse and repeat.
All in all, it seems, they’re able to get along.
Quite an assembly, indeed! Quite a throng!
And one of many such systems – each one discrete!
