In a review of all the traits that make you you,
please don’t forget those things that make me me.
For that intersection we share is what’s most true
of each of the two of us both, respectively.
It’s where we call each other home, Airu!
I’ll sweep the stairs that mount to our room with a view;
you’ll stir the coals at the hearth where we share our glee.
We’ll make the two beds of our kids who flew
the nest this winter in search of some higher tree.
And without them, you’ll still be me, I’ll still be you -
each other’s shared space, that much more roomy.
“Once two, then four, again two. We’re our own milieu!”
We’ll tell ourselves this when absence makes us gloomy.
In this space of our own that makes me you,
I cherish it most as the space that makes you me!
