A great piece of news had just come in,
most sudden and unexpected.
A stunning appointment to a board
that, frankly, had almost wrecked it.
The governor had stood there staring,
waiting for them all to happen.
They’d yawned and fidgeted in response
and looked for a bed to nap in.
He scolded himself. “Such nitwits!
What the hell was I thinking, damn it!
I could have chosen much better than them
if I had only planned it!
“And whatever those charlatans cook up next,
these take as holy writ,
leaving me to explain to the press this mounting
pile of moldy shit!”
The appointee walked in cautiously,
awaiting the governor’s cue.
He shuddered at the thought of the shoveling
he knew he’d have to do.
